Here in Jacksonville Florida (affectionately known as Jax), the weather is slowly but surely warming up, you might be thinking about relaxing days by the pool. When springtime hits, there is no better time to start getting ready for all of that great summertime pool fun. You have a whole list of chores to get through before you will be ready to swim, so the earlier you start once the weather is warm, the better it will be for you.
Uncover the Goods
The first things you will want to do to get your pool ready for summer is finally take that cover off your pool and pull out all of the equipment that you stored over the winter. Take some time and inspect your equipment to make sure that everything is in great working order. Pay special attention to valves and O-rings to make sure there are no cracks or imperfections that could cause damage to your gear. As you’re cleaning and inspecting everything, it wouldn’t hurt to lubricate the O-rings to keep them strong and tight.
Once everything is uncovered, unwrapped, inspected, and ready for use, you can get started on re-installing your pool equipment and filling up your pool if needed.
It’s a Shock
It is now time to get down to the very important task of cleaning your pool. From top to bottom, your pool needs to be skimmed, scrubbed, and brushed until it is shining like new. Make sure to pay special attention to any areas where calcification seems to build up as this build up can really harm the tile and surface of your pool. You can also use special pool vacuums to suck up any debris and other mess from the bottom of the pool. Use whatever you have available to make sure that your pool is the cleanest it can be, both for your health and safety as well as the longevity of your pool and equipment.
This is also the time that you will introduce the proper chemicals into your pool. In the springtime, there are special chemicals you use to properly shock the pool and rid it off all of the germs and bacteria that might have accumulated over the winter. Once this is taken care of you will wait, usually a few days, and then balance the chemicals again. Check with your pool supplier for specialized chemicals and packages to use specifically for de-winterization in the springtime.
No matter how warm it gets, make sure you do not decide to jump in and go for a swim until your pool water is clean, clear, and properly sanitized. Make sure to do a complete once-over of your entire pool and surrounding area for cleanliness and safety. Typically it is best to wait at least 24 hours after you shock and balance the chemicals in your pool before swimming.
The wait is one good reason why it is best to do all of the work, cleaning, and chemical balancing in the springtime before the weather is hot enough for swimming. It is best to have everything ready to go when summer does arrive, so you can focus more on picking out a swim suit and what pool side activity to enjoy first.
